The MTA College Aide Program offers a dynamic opportunity for students to gain paid, supplemental learning experiences while contributing to the talent pipeline of the MTA’s present and future workforce. This program not only enhances students’ academic journeys but also prepares them for impactful roles within the nation's largest public transit authority.
Eligible participants must be matriculated at an accredited university, holding either a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.5 and above or a master’s degree with a GPA of 2.8 and above. They must also be legally authorized to work in the US, ensuring a diverse and qualified pool of candidates ready to contribute to the MTA’s mission of efficient and innovative transportation solutions.

The City University of New York and The Metropolitan Transportation Authority have partnered to provide paid internship opportunities to CUNY students. Students are exposed to real-world work experiences at the largest public transit authority in the United States! CUNY and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) have partnered to offer paid internships to students from all CUNY colleges. These internships provide hands-on experience aligned with students' fields of study at MTA, the largest public transit authority in the US. Interns are selected by MTA supervisors through interviews, and they are compensated through the CUNY Research Foundation. This partnership not only supports students in gaining practical skills but also strengthens the collaboration between CUNY and MTA, enhancing career development opportunities.
Eligibility requires enrollment at any CUNY school, pursuing a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.5 or above, and US work authorization. During the summer session, interns can work up to 34 hours per week, and during the fall to spring sessions, they can work up to 19 hours per week.

The MTA Information Technology (IT) department's mission is to deliver innovative and responsive solutions that enable safe, effective, and efficient transportation operations that strategically align with the overarching corporate MTA goals. IT partners with MTA business units to understand the overall information needs of the transportation agencies and the communities they serve to optimize the adoption and use of information technology. Whatever your interest, MTA IT offers opportunities for Fellows to work on projects in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Information Technology, Programming, and beyond.
Eligibility requires pursuing a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.5 and above, committing to a minimum of 12 hours per week for 12 to 18 months, and being legally authorized to work in the US.

The MTA offers for-credit opportunities to law students. Under the direction of the General Counsel and other legal team members, responsibilities include conducting research on relevant cases and other substantive legal or policy issues, analyzing data and information relating to investigative matters, and drafting legal memoranda. Eligibility requires being a law student at an accredited law school, having the ability to obtain credit through the school, and being available to work up to 34 hours per week.

The Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) aims to provide work experience and a pathway to City and State government jobs for people with disabilities. By offering valuable resources to agencies and staff, PII helps catalyze a cultural shift towards more inclusive hiring practices within government agencies.
Eligibility requires individuals to be aged 18 and older, have a disability, and maintain an open case with either ACCES-VR or NYSCB.

The Industry Scholars Program allows students to apply their skills in a workplace setting, gain valuable work experience, and learn about their chosen industry to inform future career choices. This program encourages students to dream of new possibilities and explore diverse career paths.
Interns are expected to work a total of 80 hours over the 8-week program, with a weekly cap of 15 hours during the school year and 25 hours during the summer, from Monday to Friday (3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) and weekends (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is the nation’s largest youth employment program. The MTA SYEP experience connects NYC youth between the ages of 16 and 21 with career exploration opportunities and paid work experience each summer. Through SYEP, participants can explore different interests and career pathways, develop productive workplace habits, and engage in learning experiences that strengthen their social, civic, and leadership skills.
Eligible candidates for the internship must be 16-21 years old, residents of one of the five boroughs of New York City, legally allowed to work in NYC, and available to work up to 25-30 hours per week.

Pathways to Graduation (P2G), a free full-time program under the New York City Department of Education, offers internships and professional development opportunities at The MTA to high school equivalency students, helping them earn their High School Equivalency Diploma and build professional networks. The 6-week program, running from January to May in three sessions, allows interns to work up to 20 hours per week, totaling 120 hours.

City Poly offers a robust academic environment paired with social and emotional support, preparing students for informed post-secondary choices. Through a partnership with City Tech, students access rigorous courses, AP classes, and dual-credit college classes. The MTA provides work-based learning experiences and internships, allowing students to work up to 25 hours per week, totaling 100 hours of engagement.

The Technology Leadership Development Program (TLDP) is program dedicated to the professional development and advancement of students with a strong passion for a career in technology. The program provides students exposure to technology-related fields which include Cyber Security, Data Analytics, Information Technology, at the MTA. Students will work 10-15 hours a week for two weeks during their Winter break.

Supported by the Department of Youth and Community Development, Global Kids places students in year-round internships across New York City, including The MTA, providing them with marketable work skills and career readiness training. The Work Learn and Grow program includes a paid college course and a school-year internship. Eligible participants are 16-21 years old, enrolled in a public school, part of the 2023 SYEP Program, residents of NYC's five boroughs, and legally allowed to work in the US, working up to 15 hours per week.

The MTA Associate Engineer Program prepares recent graduates in Engineering, Architecture, or Project/Construction Management for future leadership roles through diverse on-the-job experiences and professional development. Participants will learn about complex systems and infrastructure, working on key projects for Metro North Railroad. Eligible candidates are recent college graduates (0-3 years), and the program includes 18 months of formal training plus 12 additional months within the role.

The MTA Electrical Apprentice Program combines hands-on training with classroom education over a specific duration, providing apprentices with valuable skills and work experience in the electrical field. Eligible participants are graduates from approved CTE high schools with a specialty in relevant trades, a good academic record, and a recommendation letter. Benefits include a competitive salary, free transportation pass, paid vacation and holidays, comprehensive benefits, a pension plan, and tuition reimbursement.

The Excelsior Service Fellowship Program recruits talented recent graduates from law, graduate, and professional schools for policy and operational positions in New York State government. MTA Excelsior Fellows begin each year in early September. Eligibility requires nomination through the candidate's school career services or fellowship liaison, and candidates must have received their graduate or advanced degree in the academic year prior to starting the program. There is no direct application process.
