Opening

Responsibilities

Painters are responsible for the preparation of wall surfaces and the application of several paint types to maintain the visual aesthetics of Grand Central Terminal.

THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Prepare worksite (e.g., layout plastic or cloth protection, tape adjoining areas, move furniture, etc.) to ensure paint is only applied to desired locations.
  • Apply paper tape to wallboards and embed into sealing compound to seal joints.
  • Apply wallboard or joint compound between boards or panels using trowels, broad knives, and spatulas to eliminate seems and remove cracks, holes, nail/screw heads and other imperfections.
  • Prepare steel, metal, wood and drywall surfaces for painting using scrapers, as well as the application of waterproofing and asphalt.
  • Prime surfaces for improved paint adhesion, to ensure color is distributed evenly and to better protect the material being painted.
  • Paint and stain walls, moldings, doors, etc. using brushes, rollers, and/or sprayers.
  • Apply stencil lettering to doors, entrances, walls and archways in the various locations in Grand Central Terminal.
  • Clean brushes, rollers, spray machines, tape tools, knives, and trowels of excess paint and compound using water or mineral spirits.
  • Work in a neat and controlled manner so that paint and compound are only applied as intended.
  • Other work as assigned under the scope of a B&B Mechanic.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED: 

Minimum of a High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).

Vocational or apprentice training in painting. Two (2) years of professional experience performing finished painting, staining and/or drywall taping may be considered in lieu of formal training. 

Must become respirator qualified within 30 days of hire/transfer date.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Knowledge of raw materials (e.g., plaster, compound, paint, stains, etc.), ability to maximize the effective distribution of materials, knowledge of and ability to use painter tools and equipment, verbal communication skills, ability to understand operating and safety rules and standards, skilled in using painter’s tools, skilled in producing high quality finished work, organizational skills, ability to exercise independent judgement, ability to evaluate situations and make recommendations, must be safety conscious.

 

Rate of pay

The starting rate for this position is $26.30 (65% of the full rate).  The full 100% rate of pay is $40.47.

The annual wage progression scale is as follows:  Year 1=65% > Year 2=70% > Year 3=75% > Year 4=80% > Year 5=90% > Year 6=100%.

This rate has been established by the collective bargaining unit and is non-negotiable.

Seniority

New employees will establish seniority in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), the union representing Painters, in accordance with the union's current collective bargaining agreement.

Members of IBT are subject to an initiation fee and monthly membership dues.

Assignments

Must have the ability to work various hours, days and shifts and locations throughout Metro-North territory.

Other Information

Pursuant to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).

Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

Details of physical activities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces while navigating tracks, yards, platforms, and walkways.
  • Ability to maintain balance while navigating narrow walkways.
  • Must be able to lift and transfer all tools and equipment to/from job sites (e.g., occasionally lift 60 lb. bucket of compound to and from Cushman/hand carts).
  • Ability to climb, stand, maintain balance and work on ladders up to 16 feet high.
  • Ability to stoop, crouch, kneel and reach in order to access difficult to access work surfaces and locations.

Details of working conditions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • May be exposed to various weather and/or atmospheric conditions.
  • Must be able to work in confined areas and crawl spaces.
  • Works at heights up to 140 feet, on scaffolds, ladders, denka lifts, single lifts, and scissor lifts.

 

Selection Criteria

Due to the competitive nature of the selection process, not all qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the position are guaranteed an interview. To be selected for a position, one must meet the following criteria: (1) satisfy the minimum requirements listed in the job posting, (2) if applicable, successfully pass a written and practical exam, (3) satisfy a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), and (4) pass a verbal interview. Metro-North may also require the applicant to undergo a physical ability test, and, if the Company extends a conditional offer, may require him or her to undergo a medical examination, which may include toxicological testing. Failure to pass any step within the hiring process will result in the disqualification of your application.

Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
