Summary:
Responsible for ensuring the LIRR fire alarm & detection, and/or water-based Suppression and/or chemical suppression systems are maintained in a state of good repair. This position will schedule, coordinate and ensure the required testing, inspection, repair and upgrades/ replacements of fire protection systems with the third-party contractor(s), LIRR Force Account, Corporate Safety, LIRR Fire Marshal or Fire Department; as per LIRR policies, contract terms, and the NYS Fire Code and industry standards. This position will perform inspection of third-party contractor(s) and LIRR Force Account work, to ensure the proper work is complete, proper material used and quality workmanship applied. This position will perform daily inspection of Fire Protection systems and other building systems associated with fire protection. This position shall provide recommendations and counsel to all Fire Protection related issues. The incumbent should be available to work on a 24/7 basis.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Inspect and monitor third party contractor and “in-house” labor performance of the fire protection system testing, inspection, maintenance & repair, upgrades and replacements.
Schedule and coordinate re-occurring code required testing, inspection and maintenance of fire protection systems. Maintain associated documentation. Provide ongoing status to management reports for tracking and accountability.
Schedule and coordinate necessary repairs, upgrades and/or replacements of fire protection systems. Coordinate and oversee final commissioning and acceptance testing of repairs and upgrades. Maintain associated documentation.
Monitor compliance issues resulting from tests/inspections and Corporate Safety department inspections and follow up in a timely matter. Maintain associated documentation.
Attend continuing education seminars related to professional field, LIRR training courses and any other approved continuing education programs. Impart technical knowledge to peers and colleagues throughout the Engineering Department.
Review and approve third party contractor invoices for accuracy, ensure labor, material are appropriate and satisfactory. Review and approve material purchase orders for force account labor support.
Actively participate in creation and maintenance of a safe work environment following corporate and Engineering Department guidelines and safety policies. Motivate yourself and others. Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to guidelines of company safety policies and procedures. Lead by example.
Perform other assignments as requested by Sr. Management, including, but not limited to report writing, document review & response, analysis, emergency inspection, accident investigation and claims investigation.
Qualifications:
A.
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Science, Fire Protection Technology or related field. Approximately four years of demonstrated, directly related, equivalent experience and education may be considered in lieu of the degree.
Approximately 4 years’ experience in positions with responsibility in commercial fire protection systems.
Must possess demonstrated experience testing, inspecting and/or troubleshooting, repairing, installing fire alarm systems and/or suppression systems (chemical and/or water-based systems). Demonstrated, directly related, equivalent experience in an Engineering skilled trade may be considered in lieu of Fire Protection experience.
Must possess effective oral & written communication skills, organizational skills and proficient computer skills.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
B:
A NYC Certificate of Fitness (COF) for a Fire Safety Director, Sprinkler Systems and/or Standpipe system inspection, testing and other maintenance.
A NYS Code Enforcement Official Certificate.
A NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology) Engineering certification for Fire Alarm Systems Certification LEVEL 2 or greater and/or NICET Engineering for Inspection and Testing of Water Based Systems Certification LEVEL 2 or greater.
Knowledge and experience of the LIRR system and operations.
Knowledge and experience managing 3rd Party Service contracts and estimating fire protection systems repairs, upgrades and/or replacements.
Recent project management experience of Fire Protection Systems
Ability to develop technical scope of work for system repairs, upgrades, replacements and service contracts.
Wage Progression
Step One: 80% - ($35.112092 )
Step Two: 90% - ($39.501104)
Step Three: 100% - ($43.890115)

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than 10 sick days in two of last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.
