Position Objective:
This position supports control technicians within Grand Central Terminal (GCT) Maintenance and Station & Facilities. Oversee engineering functions such as design, drafting, and project management, under the direction of the Senior Engineer. Assists in reviewing buildings, stations, and facilities engineering plans and designs. Performs basic designs and calculations needed for maintenance repairs and modifications. Responsible for operating and programming various building automation systems within Grand Central Terminal.
Responsibilities:
- Assists Senior Engineer and GCT Maintenance and Station & Facilities construction staff, as assigned, in all phases of construction from in-house design through certificate of occupancy.
- Assist with the development of design plans for modifications to existing buildings, stations, and facilities. Prepare technical and control drawings, and specifications of electrical and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, to ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and requirements.
- Assist with project site inspections, to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety.
- Work with all building management system (BMS) and HVAC components, relays, sensors, and alternating current and direct current (AC and DC) motors, drivers, servo systems, and pneumatic systems.
- Review submittals and assist in the development of cost estimates and work plans. Support the Capital Engineering Department in projects related to the GCT Maintenance and Station & Facilities, and perform duties as assigned by the Technical Manager.
- Perform duties as assigned by Senior Engineer.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- An understanding of industry operating practices and related regulations with the ability to stay current.
- Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production.
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings or other structures.
- Ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
- Ability to analyze the needs and product requirements and create a design.
- Knowledge of budgets and schedules as they relate to construction and maintenance projects.
- Strong HVAC and motor controls skills which includes Heat Pumps, Water Chillers, Central Air Conditioner, Fan Coil units, Building Automation, Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), Soft Starters, Human Machine Interface (HMT), Information Technology (I.T.) Infrastructure and Fire Life and Safety Fans.
- Knowledge and understanding of standard applicable building codes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Knowledge of standard safety programs, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to interact with all levels, and to foster teamwork.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and/or Access, or comparable software required.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and Visio.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance and design software programs.
- Ability to deal effectively with emergency situations on a 24 hour per day basis.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a major in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education, and/or technical credentials may be considered in place of a degree to include four (4) years of additional related experience.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in an electrical design and construction role or completion of Metro North Railroad Associate Engineer Program.
- Minimum of two years of experience managing staff/diverse workforce and/or projects.
The Following is/are preferred:
- Engineering (P.E.) License
- Thorough knowledge of Grand Central terminals’ physical characteristics including exits, stairways, elevators, escalators, etc.

This position is safety-sensitive and subject to toxicological testing.
According to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).
Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
