           Job Title: Specialist Business Intelligence Engineer

Salary Range: $110,748 – 130,719

Hay Points: 451     

Dept/Div: Information Technology/Information and Warehouse Management

Supervisor: Director, Product Development

Location: 2 Broadway

Hours of Work: 9:00 AM -5:30 PM (7.5 hours/day) or as required

 

This position is eligible for telework which is currently two days per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

 

 

About Us

The MTA transportation network has very large systems and infrastructure for financial, business, automated train, transportation, power, and physical security.  The MTA IT Department is centrally responsible for providing a full range of Information and Operational Technology services to the MTA agencies and administrative units through its operating and support units.

 

MTA IT’s Product Development group is empowered, multi-functional teams focused on the end-to-end management of development products from strategy to delivery. Using innovative processes and tools, the teams are responsible for developing and maintaining highly effective, secure, and innovative transportation, operational and back-end information systems to support MTA goals and priorities. 

 

Summary of Job

This role is responsible for the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of BI solutions and applications and analytical reports.  BI Engineer will gather details of the user requirements, perform analysis, and combining data from multiple sources into BI-specific data models, the BI Engineer is responsible for developing complex dashboards, data visualizations and data models based on defined business functional and technical requirements.

Contribute to software development methods, tools, and techniques and applies agreed standards and tools to achieve well-engineered outcomes.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with internal business stakeholders to gather business needs, define, and translate business requirements into specifications and actionable data requests.
  • Develop detailed requirements documentation including user stories, design specifications, data flows and acceptance criteria.
  • Develop and maintain complex PowerBI reports, dashboards and DAX queries.
  • Create and develop Power BI out of box visuals and custom visuals.
  • Design, develop and maintain data models and scalable, automated, reports, dashboards, visualizations etc. that will support our analytical and business needs.
  • Analysis of business data using SQL, Python or other tools.
  • Provide ETL design, development, implementation and support of the customer’s Business Intelligence & Business Analytic data for the warehouse.
  • Write and optimize SQL queries, views, and stored procedures to analyze cross functional business data sets, test the data quality and for reporting purposes, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Perform data profiling and analysis to identify data quality issues and collaborate with the data team to resolve them. 
  • Conduct thorough validation of reports and dashboards to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Monitor and tune BI tools to ensure optimum level of performance.
  • Troubleshoot data and reporting issues.
  • Defines, documents, and executes small projects or sub-projects.  May act as product owner for one or more lower-value products or services, managing elements of the product life cycle to meet customer/user needs and achieve financial or other targets.
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts quality and safety assessments, and suggests opportunities for improvement.  Contributes to identifying, analyzing, and documenting hazards and safety risks. 
  • Monitors and reports on supplier performance, customer satisfaction, adherence to security requirements and market intelligence.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and data analytics landscape to continually improve the organization's data intelligence capabilities.
  • May mentor less experienced staff
  • Performs other duties and tasks
  • May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends)
  • Travel may be required to other MTA locations or external sites
  • Observing the work performed by the contractor
  • Reviewing invoices and approving them if the work had contractual standards
  • Addressing performance issues with the contractor when possible
  • Escalating issues to other parties as needed
  • May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends
  • Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites

Qualifications:

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Hands-on experience building reports and interactive dashboard in Microsoft Power BI desktop and Power BI Paginated Reports
  • Experience in creating data sets and setting up automated data refreshes in Power BI Service or using Power BI API
  • Experience in Power BI Service, managing workspaces, and Power BI Data Flows
  • Experience writing complex DAX expressions. 
  • Proficient in SQL and Python for data processing, data transformation and data curation
  • Experience with data modeling and designing database schemas.
  • Strong knowledge of data visualization tools like Power BI, Python
  • Experience implementing row level security on data and have an understanding of application security layer models in Power BI
  • Familiarity with data warehouse design and implementation
  • Knowledge of dimensional modeling and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing)
  • Experience in Microsoft Azure database, storage and data compute technologies including ADLS, ADF, Azure Synapse Analytics, Databricks.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, Jenkins, Git.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and navigate organizational ambiguity.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Hands-on programming experience in a business setting.
  • Proficiency in at least one software engineering methodology, including but not limited to Agile, Scrum, DevOps, Extreme Programming (XP), Kanban, Lean, Rapid Application Development (RAD).
  • Experience applying a structured validation and testing method, including but not limited to:  Unit Testing, Integration Testing, System Testing, Acceptance Testing, Regression Testing.
  • Proficient collaboration skills to ensure design specifications are seamlessly implemented by the development team.
  • Proficient with version control
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and navigate organizational ambiguity.

  • Familiarity with the following vendor-specific platforms: including but not limited to, List here (e.g. Azure, Windows Server platforms, RESTful APIs, or Linux)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

         Certified Software Engineer or equivalent, Agile Project Management, technical certifications relevant to the specific position (and software products and toolsets used in that position), experience with System Development Life Cycle with the specific methodologies in use in the Department.
