Job Title: Request for Consideration – Police Officer, Professional Development Section

Dept/Div: MTA Police Department

Supervisor: Commanding Officer, Professional Standards Division

Location: Various (locations within the MTA service area)

Hours: Four (4) tours of ten hours and (16) minutes with three (3) consecutive rest days

 

Summary:

The Department is seeking qualified Members who are interested in being considered for assignment to the Training Unit. The Professional Development Section is a support unit of the MTA Police Department.  The primary goals of the unit are to provide specific job training that will improve the safety, performance, and proficiency of its Officers and to ensure the Department’s philosophy and standard operating procedures are clearly understood.  The Professional Development Section continually assesses the training needs of the Department and develops comprehensive programs to maintain professionalism in all aspects of police work.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Officers may be directed to instruct classes in any of the following disciplines: In-service training, Recruit Training School, Firearms and Tactics, Defensive Tactics and Physical Fitness, Special Operations Training, and any discipline the Commanding Officer of Professional Standards deems necessary to instruct.
  • Officers may be directed to instruct classes at Graybar, Hastings, Bethpage, Jamaica, NYPD Police Academy, MTAPD Academy, Randal’s Island, Stormville or anywhere the Department intends to host training courses.
  • Conduct in person and video-taped lessons to be presented to the department throughout the year.
  • Develop and conduct reality-based training classes in mock environments.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress of students/officer.
  • Will be required to assume Patrol Duties as a field training officer when requested to do so by supervision.
  • Attend instructor classes to stay up to date with curriculum.
  • Responsible for scheduling, record keeping, procurement of equipment, preparing training materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Qualifications:

Qualified Candidates must, at a minimum, have the following qualifications/requirements to be considered for appointment.

 

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Police Officer with the MTA Police Department.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred, but not required.
  • Instructor Development Certification preferred, but not required.
  • Certified Field Training Officer strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Commit to serve in this assignment for a minimum of two (2) years.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and participate in physical training exercises when asked to do so.
  • Must have strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Communication skills including, but not limited to, being able to interact with trainee officers, academy recruits, special operations officers, and other agency representatives.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills.
  • Possess a high level of motivation with the ability to multitask when asked to do so.
  • Be able to meet deadlines as requested by supervision.
  • Demonstrated competence on patrol.
  • Successfully completed a panel interview.
  • Complete a "Candidate Application" (Form #69) and forward it to his or her immediate supervisor who shall complete the applicable sections and then forward the form through the chain of command.

 

Other Information:

 

Based on the needs of the department, members may have to change their regional designation.

 

Once selected, the MTA Police Department will provide training to assist the Officer to achieve the below requirements.  Remaining in the Training Unit is contingent on successful acquisition and completion of the following requirements:

 

  • Successful completion of a New York State certified Firearms Instructor course.
  • Successful completion of New York State Instructor Development course.
  • Successful completion of a Train-the-Trainer course to enable the Police Officer to conduct a New York State certified Field Training Officer class and program.
  • Ability to acquire additional certifications as needed by the Department.  Travel may be required to secure these certifications.

 

Interested employees who meet the above-listed qualifications will be invited to participate in a panel interview.  Candidates should understand that they are not guaranteed an assignment with the Professional Development Section, even if they meet each of the above qualifications.

 

Candidates who have substantiated discipline/suspension or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism not related to sickness or work injury may be removed from interview consideration or consideration for the position.
