Summary
This position, individually and/or as part of a team, is required to clean and maintain the appearance of the Long Island Railroad properties, including stations and office buildings associated with company property.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Clean stations, platforms, public toilets, sidewalks, waiting rooms, ticket offices, general offices; graffiti removal.
- Shovel snow, empty trash and spread ice-melting chemicals.
- Operate company vans, cars, and light trucks and spray wash trucks.
- Routine work includes the operation of mechanical cleaning equipment, use of hydraulic lift gates, and walking behind or riding on cleaning equipment, forklifts, and hand trucks.
- Heavy box lifting, put timetables in racks, use rakes and shovels, high speed floor polishing equipment, compressors and spray washers.
- Responsible to complete daily station cleaning reports and to provide reports to supervisors as directed.
- Receive deliveries and move furniture from one location to another within the complex.
- Set up as requested: conference rooms, cafeteria, classrooms, etc. This includes the moving of chairs, tables, partitions and temporary walls for scheduled staff meetings or different departments.
- Drive between Long Island Railroad properties and make minor repairs (e.g., change flat tires) as necessary.
- Carry pocket pager device while on duty to communicate with supervisors and carry photo identification card to provide positive employee identification at all times.
- Perform work in accordance with written and oral instructions that specify the priority and frequency of daily duties at each location.
- Required to wear minimum Level D-type protective clothing (as prescribed by OSHA regulations) which includes, but is not limited to, safety shoes and full-length pants.
Qualifications
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Ability to read, follow instructions, and use, mix and handle cleaning chemicals and soaps.
- Ability to work alone or with a partner with little or no daily supervision.
- Ability to read and understand LIRR timetables/cleaning schedules.
- Must be available as directed for emergency and safety-related problems.
- Must be able to understand and follow road maps and/or written descriptions to travel between locations.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
- Prior related cleaning/maintenance and heavy lifting experience.

Other Information:
In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.
