Responsibilities: 

Under general supervision, the selected candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks including but are not limited to; installation, upgrade, configuration, maintenance, and administration of NYCT’s telecommunications network and transmission systems. Maintenance typically includes but is not limited to fault identification, analysis, and resolution. Network technologies and equipment include asynchronous fiber optics, TDM, SONET, ATM, DWDM, and COE. Ethernet and IP services, and DC Power plants with battery support. The selected candidate may be required to configure and maintain network transmission equipment, liaise with various support and material vendors, contractors, in-house maintenance groups, C&D, various Engineering groups, and provide technical support, and training to other NYCT staff as necessary, manage projects, review bulletins, procedures, drawings, contract specifications and oversee the implementation and turn-up of communications systems.   

  

Education and Experience: 

Computer Associate I-III 

  1. A certificate from an accredited technical school (approximately 675 hours) with a specialization in computer operations, and two years of satisfactory full-time computer operations experience, in a large-scale networked, multi-tiered, or mainframe computer environment; or two years of satisfactory data communications network experience working in a mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment; or
  2. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and three years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in "1" above; or
  3.  A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in "1" above; or
  4.  A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above. However, all candidates must have at least two years of full-time experience as described in "1" above.

  

Computer Specialist I-IV 

  1. A certificate from an accredited technical school (approximately 675 hours) with a specialization in computer operations plus a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and three years of satisfactory, full-time computer operations experience in a large-scale mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment, or three years of satisfactory data communications network experience in a mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment, one year of which must have been in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project; or 
  2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory full-time computer operations or data communications network experience as described in "1" above, one year of which must have been in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project; or
  3. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time computer operations or data communications network experience as described in "1" above, one year of which must have been in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project; or
  4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and three years of satisfactory full-time computer operations or data communications network experience as described in "1" above, one year of which must have been in a project leader capacity or as a major contributor on a complex project.

Desired Skills: 

 

  • High speed fiber optic telecommunications skills & familiarity in ASYNC/TDM, SONET/ATM, DWDM, COE and Ethernet services. Strong knowledge of SONET/ATM Network Transport Technology
  • Familiarity with -48 Vdc power plants (Benning, APC or other), Network monitoring and fault identification in an operating command center environment; telecommunication signaling protocols and topologies such as SONET BLSR/UPSR, ATM PNNI/UNI, and IP Routing OSPF.
  • Knowledge and experience with configuration and administration of Network Element Management Systems (NEMS). Network Management Systems I.e., Solar Winds, TEOCO, NETSMART, HPOV, REMEDY or other management systems dedicated to the monitoring of network equipment and elements.
  • Familiarity with fiber testing and test equipment (OTDR, PLM, Fiber Identifier) and or fiber splicing and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of operating systems, Microsoft Windows, SUN OS, LINUX RED HAT, 
  • Strong understanding and experience of TL/1 and SNMP telecommunication management protocols.
  • Knowledge of Fujitsu SONET, COE & DWDM ROADAM Technology and familiarization with ATM Equipment; Seabridge (NSN), Marconi (Ericsson) or CISCO.  Programming Perl, C++, Oracle, SQL., Registered CCNA, CCNP Service provider, CCNP Switches and or Routing, or MEF.  
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and project management skills.
