Summary
The Senior Engineering Director Level 2 (Fire Protection) will use advanced Engineering knowledge, established experience, and 2D and 3D CAD/BIM skills to prepare and oversee complete design solutions, including non-standard elements.
This position works with the Chief Fire Protection Engineer and Project Management leadership to ensure that projects are understood in scope and schedule. The selected candidate must be a critical thinker with advanced problem-solving skills and a results-oriented and data-driven mindset.
Responsibilities
Lead a team of engineers involved in the concept design, modification, analysis, and construction of MTA C&D projects to produce detailed and accurate drawings and specifications, including for MTA-related infrastructure.
Meet with internal MTA C&D departments and Agency Owners regarding project goals and timelines.
Ensures project plans are in place, that progress is continuously monitored, and that open issues are tracked and closed out.
Ensures work is checked for quality, completeness, and adherence to proper engineering codes/standards.
Uses various software and programs to develop/review analysis and design; plans preparation/review.
Mentors young engineers and designers, leading technical teams while developing staff.
Prepares, reviews, and/or approves proposals, contracts, or cost estimates.
Negotiates revisions, changes, and additions to contractual agreements with sub-consultants and clients.
Assists the Project Management team through creative problem-solving, during interactions with Agency Owners and by completing tasks to meet the project schedule.
Provides construction inspection support and engineering oversight on active construction projects.
Works with the Project Management team for project reviews, change procedures, and commercial and project control updates.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science degree in the appropriate Engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural, Communications, Track, Signals, Environmental, Fire Protection).
Masters preferred.
Must have a minimum of fourteen (14) years of related experience.
Must have a minimum of eight (8) years in a management or supervisory role and/or project manager role in a large, multi-faceted organization.
Competencies:
Comprehensive knowledge of fire protection principles, risk assessment, and fire protection systems.
Knowledge of current methods of fire protection system design.
Thorough understanding of performance-based design methodology and assessing risk.
AHJ experience with performance-based design is preferred.
Technical expertise in fire protection systems in both the design environment and in the field.
A registered NYS licensed professional engineer (PE) is required.
Demonstrated experience in large-scale engineering issues for significant construction projects or projects with highly complex systems preferred.
Demonstrated experience leading and managing designers, contractors, subcontractors, and/or vendors.
Demonstrated knowledge of the applicable industry and NYS building and design codes and standards.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders at all internal organizational levels.
Demonstrated ability to work in a high-profile, high-pressure environment effectively.
Must have focus and ability to deliver on results, organizational effectiveness, and continuous improvement.
Must be a proven leader as a change agent and creative/innovative thinker with the ability to align business goals with solutions to drive process improvements.
Must possess excellent team-building, listening, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.
Alternate Delivery experience preferred.
Proficiency in current design and engineering software and Microsoft Office are required.

Able to multi-task and be flexible/adapt to rapidly changing project requirements/timelines.
Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
