This position is eligible for telework which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.
SUMMARY:
The Product Manager, Data and APIs identifies and executes innovative ways to improve rider outcomes, working to modernize customer-facing datasets, applications, and standard operating procedures, and to increase efficiency and effectiveness of our work.
The incumbent will, as Product Manager, own MTA’s many APIs that serve static and real-time service data, which are consumed by MTA’s customer-facing products, some internal systems, and by third-party app developers.
The incumbent will also use their knowledge of the MTA’s operations to support and inform analyses of operational data, with the goal of identifying or developing best practices that the MTA can implement to improve quality of service, safety, and the overall customer experience. Solutions must work not just in theory, but tangibly improve outcomes for customers and staff, so real-world experience in our system is important.
Strong candidates will be systems thinkers who can scope projects in response to complex challenges and work with a range of internal and external stakeholders to see projects through to completion.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Own the high-level short- and long-term roadmaps for 10-20 static and real-time service data APIs. Serve in this capacity as Product Owner within the MTA Product/Agile framework.
- Define and prioritize new APIs and changes/enhancements to existing APIs in response to new and changing needs from both MTA and third-party apps and systems.
- Collaborate with MTA IT product delivery teams and vendors to plan, implement, and document the APIs.
- Owns MTA’s relationship with and support for third-party developers, including both direct relationships with large consumers like Google and Apple and online forum-based interaction with smaller parties.
- Analyze data to identify and address data inaccuracies and inconsistencies all the way upstream.
- Review our complicated data pipelines and move toward a single source of truth for train and bus arrival data. Standardize data created by all agencies and align with international best practices.
- Develop practical policy and procedural recommendations for operational adjustments across all agencies to improve the customer experience, while considering the needs of their individual operating environments.
- Design and advance strategies for modernizing data pipelines and automating manual and resource intensive processes.
- Streamline the digital customer experience by integrating duplicative systems and sunsetting legacy ones.
- Ensure train and bus control systems are designed and developed with customer impact in mind.
- Contribute to creation of the unified MTA customer experience vision, plus product roadmaps spanning multiple customer applications. Ensure digital touchpoints meet strategic standards and customer needs.
- Assist with other tasks and assignments as necessary to drive forward the MTA customer experience.
- Select, develop, and motivate personnel within the department. Provide career development for subordinates.
- Review performance of staff. Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables all employees to develop and contribute to their full potential.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience in planning, administration, and auditing experience for technically driven projects.
- Experience using cloud computing, analytics, data visualization, design and prototyping, and project/task management software.
- Must possess strong planning, analytical and problem-solving skills with the demonstrated ability to identify problems, use logic to address work related issues and recommend solutions.
- Must possess strong communication skills with the ability to provide written reports, presentations, and analysis reports.
- Must possess good judgment and decision-making skills with a high degree of professional integrity and ethics.
- Must possess superior ability to pay attention to details and be thorough in completing work tasks, especially when dealing with complex data.
- In-depth knowledge of public transit data standards, MTA operations and/or technical systems is preferred.
- Ability to multitask and balance competing priorities efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to work with all internal levels within a given organization.
- May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends).
- Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Transportation, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Urban Planning, Public Policy, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited college may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- A minimum of 5 or more years’ experience with data analysis, data engineering, and/or data systems management.
