Summary
Accounting Analysts / Senior Accounting Analysts in the ACCOUNTING area are responsible to assist in the performance of the record-keeping, account reconciliation, journal entries, fixed asset capitalization and retirement, lease accounting, inventory reconciliation, accounts receivable system billing, month-end and annual financial closing, and reporting of the Long Island Rail Road Financial Statements. It is expected that this position acts as a liaison between BSC, Project Management, Budgets, Operations, IT as well as internal and external customers to ensure efficient and timely billing and cash collection, and to ensure essential financial data is accurately reported.


Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

1. Responsible for assisting with activities related to the proper accounting and financial reporting of leases in accordance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board, Statement No. 87 – Leases.
2. Review lease procurement contracts and purchase orders to ensure proper accounting treatment.
3. Assist with preparation of annual composite of leased vehicles for financial reporting in accordance with GASB 87.
4. Coordinate with procurement, business operations, MTA Real Estate, IT for MTA, Yardi systems, and Greystone.
5. Assist with Fixed Assets capitalization and depreciation in accordance with GAAP, GASB and agencies’ policy.
6. Prepare and record monthly rental revenue and resolve reconciling items between agency records and Yardi reports.
7. Reconcile Operating Funded Capital (OFC) project balances and Vehicle Fleet purchases.
8. Assist with preparation of quarterly Roll forward of Capital Assets for financial reporting.
9. Assist with record asset retirements.
10. Assist with annual issuance of the audited financial statements, including preparing required footnotes, supporting schedules and account analysis required for financial reporting.
11. Provide information as needed for internal and external audits.
12. Prepare timely and accurate expense accruals for reimbursable projects.
13. Reconcile, report and validate Inter-Company accounts between other MTA agencies.
14. Take lead interfacing with BSC, Project Management, Budgets, Operations, IT as well as internal and external customers to investigate and resolve various accounting issues and ensure essential financial data is accurately reported and available in the accounting system.
15. Assist in the month-end and annual accounting close. Prepare general ledger monthly account analysis and schedules. Determine/resolve discrepancies and prepare various journal entries as needed.
16. Prepare inventory journal entries as needed.
17. Create and perform PeopleSoft queries to assist with the monthly close and analysis.
18. Reconcile and analyze the claims and suits activity processed by the Law department.
19. Participate in the year end accrual process.
20. Responsible for various accounting code updates.
21. Support Accounting Managers and Supervisors.
22. Other duties as required.


Qualifications

Accounting Analyst
• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or related field.
• One to three years accounting, finance or similar experience including database management and reporting; along with financial analysis and reconciliations.
• Knowledge of accounting systems and procedures. (i.e., PeopleSoft).
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Access, Excel - use of pivot tables & v-lookups, Word and PowerPoint).
• Excellent quantitative, analytic and deductive reasoning capabilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of management and external contacts.
• Strong ability to take control of assigned tasks with limited supervision.
• Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Strong ability to prepare accurate work papers, work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Senior Accounting Analyst
• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or related field.
• A minimum of four years accounting, finance or similar experience including database management and reporting; along with financial analysis and reconciliations.
• Knowledge of accounting systems and procedures. (I.e., PeopleSoft).
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Access, Excel - use of pivot tables & v-lookups, Word and PowerPoint).
• Excellent quantitative, analytic and deductive reasoning capabilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of management and external contacts.
• Strong ability to take control of assigned tasks with limited supervision.
• Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Strong ability to prepare accurate work papers, work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Preferred/Desirable Skill / Qualifications:
• Knowledge of accounting systems.
• MBA in Accounting or Finance
• CPA

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record.
