Summary
 
The ALM Product Specialist is a proactive, independent contributor to the development of multiple products, with expertise in a variety of tools, providing value to the business through effective process analysis and improvements, as well as requirements development and documentation. The product specialist collaborates on a wide array of products, typically providing direction to colleagues and peers with a diverse set of cross-functional partners across Product, Engineering, Infrastructure, Design, Data Science, Data Engineering, and others as needed. The purpose of this position is to lead product specialists and their product development teams to; (a) create and manage workflows on product development initiatives by continually maturing the backlog and (b) minimize impediments so that product specialists and their teams are not blocked or surprise
The ALM Product Specialist will lead the assigned staff in agile transformation and the digital agenda and develop roadmaps for the ALM applications and/or infrastructure products assigned. This position will manage a team of technical staff responsible for defining the launch of new products and services, developing technical roadmaps for existing products and delivering product features in an agile environment.
The ALM Product Specialist will play a pivotal role in bringing the intuitive no-low code ecosystem from an idea to life with ALM Platforms. In this team, the goal is to accelerate digital transformation and unlock innovation in ALM by giving our business the latest available technology. The Platform Products teams are exploring how using our Services, Tools, and Processes can enable anyone to build apps on the ALM platforms to transform their work life. This team would consist of a Product Manager, UX/UI designers, front end developers, and Engineers.
 
Responsibilities:
Level 1
  • Conducts requirements gathering sessions, producing basic documentation to catalogue customer needs.
  • Creates requirements documentation and simple functional specifications to ensure clarity around customer needs and corresponding deliverables.
  • Validates and obtains sign-off for functional requirements/specifications.
  • Documents changes to requirements throughout the project and routes information to ensure timeliness and accuracy of deliverables.
  • Determines business strategy, under guidance, for one or more products and translates it into user stories and business requirements for the development team.
  • Builds product development documentation within JIRA and runs Scrum ceremonies including Sprint planning and Sprint review.
  • Working knowledge of ServiceNow platform and features and Atlassian Tools is a must.
  • Serves as point-person on products to clarify business requirements and UX strategy to IT.
  • Analytical decision support draws conclusions by completing a thorough analysis of circumstances; considers various options and makes an informed decision.
  • Risk management: prioritizes risk mitigation while supporting goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Develops and utilizes relationships with a focus on productivity; works through conflict in a confident and objective manner.
  • Completes daily tasks in an organized, efficient, and accurate manner—consistent with expectations.

 Level 2
  • Same as Level 1 with the following additional responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the technical product managers and ALM feature owners to understand detailed requirements and deliver high quality products to our users.
  • Facilitates requirements gathering sessions for basic requests, typically under a more senior product specialist, proactively drawing out requirements from stakeholders to catalogue customer needs.
  • Performs gap analysis to identify opportunities for process improvement or management control of workflows.
  • Understanding of application development on a cloud platform is required.
  • Knowledge of ServiceNow platform and Atlassian tools is required.
  • Creates requirements documentation and simple functional specifications to capture business needs and for validation with the client and shared with project stakeholders.
  • Validates and obtains sign-off for functional requirements/specifications.
  • Takes ownership of changes to requirements throughout the project, documenting and routing any changes as appropriate.
  • Tracks and reports on project progress against BA defined requirements throughout the project life cycle to ensure timeliness and accuracy of deliverables.
  • For multiple products, determines business strategy for products and translates it into user stories and business requirements for the development teams.
  • Responsible for the overall systems development life cycle working with vendors as well as other product teams.
  • A strong track record of project delivery for large, cross-functional, projects
  • Serves as point-person on products to clarify business requirements and UX strategy to IT, and ultimately responsible for testing and approval of implementation.
  • Analytical decision support draws conclusions by completing a thorough analysis of circumstances; considers various options and makes an informed decision.
  • Risk management: prioritizes risk mitigation while supporting goals and objectives of the organization.

Level 3
  • Same as level 2 with the following additional responsibilities:
  • Facilitates requirements gathering sessions to understand and document complex business needs, clarifying vague or unclear requirements.
  • Provides direction and leadership to more junior level product specialists.
  • Determines business strategy for products and translates it into user stories and business requirements for the development team.
  • Builds product documentation within JIRA and runs Scrum ceremonies including Sprint planning and Sprint reviews.
  • Applies thorough understanding of business processes and user needs to formulate and define system scope and objectives.
  • Analyzes business operations and processes to identify opportunities for process. improvement, management control of work, or automation.
    Generates process and solution options and reviews with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Serves as point-person on ALM products to clarify business requirements and UX strategy to IT, and ultimately responsible for testing and approval of implementation.
  • Analytical decision support draws conclusions by completing a thorough analysis of circumstances; considers various options and makes an informed decision.
  • Risk management: prioritizes risk mitigation while supporting goals and objectives of the organization.

  • Establishes systems to monitor the operating efficiency of existing application systems and provides (or arranges for) proactive maintenance to keep systems operational.
  • Ensures technical support and problem resolution for client inquiries and production issue resolution meets business needs, making changes to process as needed. 
    Maintains awareness of projects or changes to other systems that may affect their applications/systems and ensures there is no degradation of service. 
  • Develops a long-term plan (3-5 years) for ALM applications and systems in the area(s) supported, factoring in an understanding of future directions of the business area as well as changes in the technology landscape. 
Qualifications
Level 1
  • Documents business requirements to effectively capture the business needs and convey understanding to technical staff.

Level 3
Same as level 2 with the following additional qualifications:
  • Ability to analyze process and data flows, identifying potential redundancies, overlaps in accountability, key decision points, etc.
  • Ability to make recommendations for action plans or streamlining to improve business performance.
  • Ability to take calls from business leads and resolves most support issues independently on how to use a client-specific system/application within their area of expertise and/or escalates as appropriate.
  • Must possess a good understanding of how current systems are used and operate within the client area(s) supported.
  • Must possess a good understanding of the different systems/applications in use in the area supported and how they interrelate.
  • Must possess good problem-solving and judgement skills to know who to engage and coordinate with when a system they are working on may impact another system/application.
DESIRED SKILLS/ COMPETENCIES
  • Experience with Atlassian tools, Jira, Jira Align, Jira Service Desk and Confluence in Data Center and/or Cloud environments.
  • ServiceNow Development experience a must.
  • Be technically hands on and guide the team leading from the front
  • Work closely with the technical product managers to understand detailed requirements and deliver high quality products to our users
  • Collaborate closely with other development teams (and managers) across Business Units to help with continuous improvement of the Now architecture, tools, and processes.
  • Develop on the best cloud software for businesses using ServiceNow and Atlassian platforms.
  • Ability to drive roadmap, work across organizational boundaries, and exercise appropriate influence to ensure commitment to customers and product quality.
  • Responsible for the overall systems development life cycle.
  • Management and execution against project plans and delivery commitments.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the product delivery team within an Agile/Scrum environment.

Education and Experience:
Level 1
  • BS in Computer Science or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience 
Level 2
  • BS in Computer Science or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. 
Level 3
  • BS in Computer Science or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. A master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience.
