Summary 

Responsible for performing maintenance and construction work, including, but not limited to repairing wooden railroad bridges, trestles, tunnel supports, and performing a variety of conventional carpentry, construction, concrete work, painting, general masonry work, tiling, and taping.

Responsibilities 

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Repair wooden railroad bridges, trestles, and tunnel supports.
  • Repair/replace structural members of bridges.
  • Performing a variety of concrete and conventional carpentry and construction work and related duties, including, but are not limited to painting, general masonry work, tiling, taping, spackling, and wallpapering, and snow removal/shoveling.
  • Utilizing and/or handling both hand and power tools.
  • Digging trenches and holes.
Qualifications 
  • Must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State’s Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
  • Prior carpentry or related construction experience.
  • Must be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) permit at time of hire.
  • Ability to demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to give as well as receive and understand oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to read simple blueprints or drawings.
  • Must provide own hand-tools and customary carpentry tools (list provided by LIRR).

          Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications:

  • Trade school/vocational training in carpentry.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program

70% - 1st 365 Calendar Days ($29.82/hr)
70% - 2nd 365 Calendar Days ($29.82/hr)
75% - 3rd 365 Calendar Days ($31.95/hr)
80% - 4th 365 Calendar Days ($34.08/hr)
85% - 5th 365 Calendar Days ($36.21/hr)
85% - 6th 365 Calendar Days ($36.21/hr)
90% - 7th 365 Calendar Days ($38.34/hr)
100% - After 2,555 Calendar Days ($42.60/hr)

Other Information

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.  Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety-sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
