Responsibilities:
Railcar Electrical Mechanics are responsible for the inspection, repair and maintenance of electrical components on diesel/electric and electric locomotives.
Duties to include:
Conduct Inspections of Locomotive Electrical Components: Perform scheduled electrical inspections in compliance with company and industry standards; inspect various small (relays, voltage regulators, rectifiers, solid state components, circuitry) and large components (traction motors, and motor alternators, inverters, transformers, HVAC, cab signals); inspect and test circuitry with electrical testing equipment (multi-meters, amp probe, laptop); inspect for unusual smells, overheating and small changes in the visual appearance of objects/materials.
Troubleshoot Malfunctions:
Diagnose electrical, electromechanical and electronic malfunctions in locomotive components; assess nature of problem and determine needed corrective action; including both high and low voltage equipment.
Perform Maintenance and Repair:
Repair or replace electrical, electromechanical and electronic components in the locomotive cab or electrical compartments (junction boxes, voltage regulators high voltage power supply unit, traction motor-propulsion systems); disassemble and clean electrical parts; assemble components; provide maintenance for miscellaneous equipment and facilities using blueprints, schematics, and location circuit plans.
Work with Shop Machines and Tools:
Safely and effectively operate high and low precision measuring instruments (micrometers, tape measures, and volt/ohm meters); electric, pneumatic and hydraulic tools (drills, wrenches, grinders); material handling equipment (lifts, cranes, and overhead hoists).
Practice Safe Work Habits:
Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices and procedures, wear prescribed safety apparel; take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety of self or co-workers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting and at the completion of work.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
Minimum of a High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).

Rate of Pay
Full-time MofE Railcar Electrical Mechanics at the 100% rate of pay earn $75,088 per year, not including overtime.
The starting rate of 65% for this position is equivalent to $23.46/hour. The wage progression scale is as follows: Year 1=65%>Year 2=70%>Year 3=75%>Year 4=80%>Year 5=92%>Year 6=100%. The full rate of pay is $36.10/hour. The hourly rate is non-negotiable, based on the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.
For those approved for a journeyman rate, the wage progression scale is as follows:
Year 1 = 80% > Year 2 = 85% > Year 3 = 100% of the full rate of pay.
Full-time MofE Railcar Electrical Mechanics on the journeyman scale earn $60,070 per year (at 80%), $63,663 per year (at 85%), and $75,088 per year (at 100%), not including overtime.

New Hire Candidates onboarded between May 9th, 2023, through September 30th, 2023 will be eligible for a sign on bonus:
Seniority
New employees will establish seniority in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW), the union representing Electricians, in accordance with the union's current collective bargaining agreement.
Members are subject to an initiation fee and monthly union dues.
Assignments
Ability to work various hours, days, shifts and all locations along MNR service territory (including, but not limited to Stamford and New Haven, CT; Croton Harmon, North White Plains and Brewster, NY) is required.

This is a federally regulated position subject to both pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.
As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $101,379.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker.
Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

Selection Criteria
Due to the competitive nature of the selection process, not all qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the position are guaranteed an interview. To be selected for a position, one must meet the following criteria: (1) satisfy the minimum requirements listed in the job posting, (2) if applicable, successfully pass a written and practical exam, (3) satisfy a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), and (4) pass a verbal interview. Metro-North may also require the applicant to undergo a physical ability test, and, if the Company extends a conditional offer, may require him or her to undergo a medical examination, which may include toxicological testing. Failure to pass any step within the hiring process will result in the disqualification of your application.
Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
